Our History

The Community Garden Club of Duxbury was established in the early summer of 1927.  The club was the second garden club in Duxbury formed to accommodate a large number of men and women interested in joining. The first meeting occurred at the home of Dr. Nathaniel Emerson on Powder Point Avenue. Dr. Emerson was a retired physician, and an enthusiastic horticulturist, who was unanimously voted in a president at the club’s first meeting. In subsequent years, the club grew to over one hundred members.

Members met in large halls or barns to accommodate their numbers. At first, they met. only in summer but expanded their meetings throughout the year. The club became a charter member of the Garden Club Federation of Massachusetts. Their first large project was a flower show held at Partridge Academy next to the Town Hall on Tremont Street. which included floral design, plant life, and vegetables.

The club has made a strong commitment to community service since its inception.  During World War II, the club offered instruction in planting and maintaining Victory gardens and sending seeds to Great Britain.  The club is proud of its involvement in town beautification, floral design, horticultural, and environmental education. The club strives to create an inclusive membership that fosters a sense of community and friendship.

The Community Garden Club of Duxbury is a 501(c)3 non-profit organization.
